Christmas spirit dead?
Lech gets in the Christmas spirit, but what is the Christmas Spirit? Well it is that time of year, when we are told we must buy stuff for people we know. We are also told that it is a time of year for peace and love and family. Why does that have to be only this time of year, especially when you consider there are wars happening even during the Christmas period. What is Christmas really and how has it evolved?
Originally Christmas was a pagan ceremony celebrating Yule. Basically the ancient astronomers in the northern hemisphere noticed that the nights where getting longer, darker and colder. They thought the world was approaching Armageddon (sound familiar?) But after the 21st December (the winter solstice) the nights started to gradually become shorter again. They waited three days to make sure it was a trend. So when it was confirmed they celebrated that the end of days was not upon us. Yule was born. Then along came the church, with a new religion. They wanted to make the new followers and convert the pagan masses to the new faith, so they annexed Yule with Christmas. Then in the 20th Century a brand new religion arose world wide. One that was adopted in almost every country and accepted by every religion......consumerism. Christmas was then annexed by big commercial entities and promoted as time for peace, family and buying as many goods as your credit card would allow.
Maybe the next evolution of Christmas should be that we just accept that we are all different, with different views, opinions, and values. That as long as we don't harm another person, who cares what we think or believe or not believe. Maybe buying shit we don't need is not the solution. Maybe just shed all the artificial non-sense and just get back to nude basics as Lech has done. Strip away the crap we don't need and just stick with the important things in life.
