Speak up...while you still can.

Imagine that you suddenly lost your voice and could not talk to anyone. Imagine that you lost the ability to write. How could you communicate with people, or the world? How could you communicate your thoughts or ideas? How could you explain to people your needs, your pain, your joy your views? That is what freedom of speech is about. To take away that freedom would be like loosing your ability to speak or write or communicate in any way. That is what this series with Anne is about.

Unfortunately the world is more and more loosing it's freedoms to speak. Many countries like Australia don't have freedom of speech protected by a constitution. We are at the mercy of whatever government is in power. Recently this current government has taken the most draconian step in stifling free speech than any before it. Anyone criticising their new carbon tax will be fined up to $1.1million. (See this article, The Daily Telegraph and The Herlad Sun)They will have "thought police" or "carbon cops" roaming the streets and going into businesses to see if they are speaking out against the government. If we allow this type of behaviour from any government then what will they be willing to do next?

Will they take away people who dare to speak out, to "re-education camps" like Stalinist Russia? Or just simply make you disappear forever, like in some Latin American countries?

Freedom of speech is one of the most fundamental human rights, that should be protected fiercely, and valued highly. Even points of view that you don't agree with or dislike, as opposing views are important for discussion, important for comparison, and important for people to see alternate ideas. How else can we voice our distaste or dissatisfaction about a government? Does the government not realise that if they did the right thing, that people wouldn't be criticising? It is our speech that tells a government, that they are wrong and must change their ways. Apparently they want to "Dictate" what is best for us....which is not democracy, but is actually called a dictatorship.

This issue is far too important to ignore and must be protected with all our efforts. Protect your freedom of speech, speak out, take action, while you still can.
